Some data is more expensive than others.

O2 is charging £10 for 3GB if you hook your iPhone up to a computer and use it as a modem. If you want to buy another 1GB of data use on your iphone yourself, however, you have to shell out £10. Welcome to the lunatic world of O2′s pricing plans.

I’m a heavy iPhone data user, I’m happy to admit that. I use e-mail almost obsessively, I browse the web, I listen to music, and I settle pub arguments with the power of my sleek glass-and-plastic-and-brains device like it’s going out of fashion. (more…)

Reddit breaches Privacy Policy

So, the online bookmarking / social network site Reddit was down for a couple of days, and admits to having a lot of their data stolen. They further admit that the data will have included logins, passwords, and e-mail addresses.

The part that was stolen, according to the news story, was “media of ours that contained a backup of a portion of the reddit database was stolen recently”… Not being funny, but what the hell is a media company doing having unencrypted ‘backup media’ (CD or DVD, presumably) laying around? That’s hardly what’s known as being diligent in protecting your users. (more…)

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social networking site, just like MySpace. The big difference is that Linked In is focusing on professional networks, and is often described as a career-network for grown-ups.

LinkedIn is located in Palo Alto, California, and is funded by Greylock and Sequoia Capital, the venture capital firms behind Google, Yahoo!, Cisco, and Apple. LinkedIn’s CEO Reid Hoffman was formerly Executive Vice President of PayPal.

The philosophy behind LinkedIn is that you are more likely to conduct business with people you trust, and that you are more likely to trust people you know, or people you are connected to via somebody. This means that if you are looking for a good writer, and you one who is a friend of a friend, you can ask to get introduced, and then initiate a business arrangement. (more…)

Hotmail – the internet “killer app” that went went down in flames

Hotmail was started as a free web-based e-mail service in 1996. It was not the first, not the best, not the fastest, not the easiest to use and not the most innovative service, but it quickly grew to become the biggest and most popular nonetheless. Then Microsoft joined in the frenzy.
